    Puolivalvottu WLAN-radiokarttojen oppiminen

    In this thesis a manifold learning method is applied to the problem of WLAN positioning and automatic radio map creation. Due to the nature of WLAN signal strength measurements, a signal map created from raw measurements results in non-linear distance relations between measurement points. These signal strength vectors reside in a high-dimensioned coordinate system. With the help of the so called Isomap-algorithm the dimensionality of this map can be reduced, and thus more easily processed. By embedding position-labeled strategic key points, we can automatically adjust the mapping to match the surveyed environment. The environment is thus learned in a semi-supervised way; gathering training points and embedding them in a two-dimensional manifold gives us a rough mapping of the measured environment. After a calibration phase, where the labeled key points in the training data are used to associate coordinates in the manifold representation with geographical locations, we can perform positioning using the adjusted map. This can be achieved through a traditional supervised learning process, which in our case is a simple nearest neighbors matching of a sampled signal strength vector. We deployed this system in two locations in the Kumpula campus in Helsinki, Finland. Results indicate that positioning based on the learned radio map can achieve good accuracy, especially in hallways or other areas in the environment where the WLAN signal is constrained by obstacles such as walls.Työssä sovelletaan monisto-oppimismenetelmää WLAN-paikannuksen ja automaattisen radiokartan luonnin ongelmaan. WLAN-signaalivoimakkuuksien mittausten luonteen takia käsittelemättömät mittaukset aiheuttavat epälineaarisia suhteita radiokartan mittauspisteiden välille. Nämä signaalivoimakkuusvektorit sijaitsevat avaruudessa jolla on korkea ulottuvuus. Niin kutsutun Isomap-algoritmin avulla kartan ulottuvuuksia voidaan karsia, jolloin sitä on helpompi työstää. Upottamalla karttaan merkittyjä avainpisteitä, se voidaan automaattisesti säätää vastaamaan mitattua ympäristöä. Ympäristö siis opitaan puolivalvotusti; keräämällä harjoituspisteitä ja upottamalla ne kaksiulotteiseen monistoon saadaan karkea kartta ympäristöstä. Kalibrointivaiheen jälkeen, jossa merkittyjä avainpisteitä käytetään yhdistämään moniston koordinaatit maantieteellisiin kohteisiin, voidaan suorittaa paikannusta säädetyn kartan avulla. Tämä voidaan tehdä perinteisen valvotun oppimisen avulla, joka tässä tapauksessa on yksinkertainen lähimmän naapurin löytäminen mitatulle signaalivoimakkuusvektorille. Järjestelmää kokeiltiin kahdessa paikassa Kumpulan kampuksessa Helsingissä. Tulokset viittaavat siihen että opitun radiokartan avulla paikannus voi saavuttaa hyvän tarkkuuden, etenkin käytävissä ja muissa tiloissa jossa esteet kuten seinät rajoittavat WLAN-signaalia

    WLAN-paikannuksen elinkaaren tukeminen

    The advent of GPS positioning at the turn of the millennium provided consumers with worldwide access to outdoor location information. For the purposes of indoor positioning, however, the GPS signal rarely penetrates buildings well enough to maintain the same level of positioning granularity as outdoors. Arriving around the same time, wireless local area networks (WLAN) have gained widespread support both in terms of infrastructure deployments and client proliferation. A promising approach to bridge the location context then has been positioning based on WLAN signals. In addition to being readily available in most environments needing support for location information, the adoption of a WLAN positioning system is financially low-cost compared to dedicated infrastructure approaches, partly due to operating on an unlicensed frequency band. Furthermore, the accuracy provided by this approach is enough for a wide range of location-based services, such as navigation and location-aware advertisements. In spite of this attractive proposition and extensive research in both academia and industry, WLAN positioning has yet to become the de facto choice for indoor positioning. This is despite over 20 000 publications and the foundation of several companies. The main reasons for this include: (i) the cost of deployment, and re-deployment, which is often significant, if not prohibitive, in terms of work hours; (ii) the complex propagation of the wireless signal, which -- through interaction with the environment -- renders it inherently stochastic; (iii) the use of an unlicensed frequency band, which means the wireless medium faces fierce competition by other technologies, and even unintentional radiators, that can impair traffic in unforeseen ways and impact positioning accuracy. This thesis addresses these issues by developing novel solutions for reducing the effort of deployment, including optimizing the indoor location topology for the use of WLAN positioning, as well as automatically detecting sources of cross-technology interference. These contributions pave the way for WLAN positioning to become as ubiquitous as the underlying technology.GPS-paikannus avattiin julkiseen käyttöön vuosituhannen vaihteessa, jonka jälkeen sitä on voinut käyttää sijainnin paikantamiseen ulkotiloissa kaikkialla maailmassa. Sisätiloissa GPS-signaali kuitenkin harvoin läpäisee rakennuksia kyllin hyvin voidakseen tarjota vastaavaa paikannustarkkuutta. Langattomat lähiverkot (WLAN), mukaan lukien tukiasemat ja käyttölaitteet, yleistyivät nopeasti samoihin aikoihin. Näiden verkkojen signaalien käyttö on siksi alusta asti tarjonnut lupaavia mahdollisuuksia sisätilapaikannukseen. Useimmissa ympäristöissä on jo valmiit WLAN-verkot, joten paikannuksen käyttöönotto on edullista verrattuna järjestelmiin, jotka vaativat erillisen laitteiston. Ensinnäkin, paikannuksen pystyttäminen ja ylläpito vaativat aikaa ja vaivaa. Toiseksi, langattoman signaalin eteneminen ja vuorovaikutus ympäristön kanssa on hyvin monimutkaista, mikä tekee mallintamisesta vaikeaa. Kolmanneksi, eri teknologiat ja laitteet kilpailevat lisenssivapaan taajuusalueen käytöstä, mikä johtaa satunnaisiin paikannustarkkuuteen vaikuttaviin tietoliikennehäiriöihin. Väitöskirja esittelee uusia menetelmiä joilla voidaan merkittävästi pienentää paikannusjärjestelmän asennuskustannuksia, jakaa ympäristö automaattisesti osiin WLAN-paikannusta varten, sekä tunnistaa mahdolliset langattomat häiriölähteet.     Semi-supervised Convolutional Neural Networks for Identifying Wi-Fi Interference Sources

    We present a convolutional neural network for identifying radio frequency devices from signal data, in order to detect possible interference sources for wireless local area networks. Collecting training data for this problem is particularly challenging due to a high number of possible interfering devices, difficulty in obtaining precise timings, and the need to measure the devices in varying conditions. To overcome this challenge we focus on semi-supervised learning, aiming to minimize the need for reliable training samples while utilizing larger amounts of unsupervised labels to improve the accuracy. In particular, we propose a novel structured extension of the pseudo-label technique to take advantage of temporal continuity in the data and show that already a few seconds of training data for each device is sufficient for highly accurate recognition.Peer reviewe

    Paikan henki ja luonne arkkitehtuurissa:lähtökohtia suunnittelutyön aloittamiselle

    Tiivistelmä. Diplomityöni on kirjallinen tutkielma paikan hengestä arkkitehtuurissa; mitä se sisältää ja mitä sillä tarkoitetaan arkkitehtuurikeskustelussa. Näkökulma aiheeseen on arkkitehdin tai kaupunkisuunnittelijan, joka on aloittamassa suunnittelutehtävään liittyen alueen paikka-analyysiä. Työn tavoitteena on selvittää, mitkä ovat paikan henkeen vaikuttavia osatekijöitä, ja miten niitä voi suunnittelun keinoin käsitellä paikan hengen tavoittamiseksi. Lisäksi tavoitteena on hahmotella menetelmärunko paikka-analyysin tekemiselle. Tutkielmassa taustoitan aihetta ympäristöestetiikkaan tutustuen sekä paikan kokemista ja jäsentämistä käsitteleviin arkkitehtuurin teorioihin pohjautuen. Pääpainona on erityisesti fenomenologinen paikan kokeminen. Lisäksi pohdin paikkaa ja tilaa muodostavien osatekijöiden jäsentämistä kuvallisia perustekijöitä hyväksikäyttäen. Taustoittamisen viimeisenä osana esittelen kaksi olemassa olevaa menetelmää arkkitehtuurin paikka-analyysin tekemiselle ja peilaan niiden tavoitteita ja lähestymistapaa omaani. Esiteltyyn tausta-aineistoon ja omaan pohdintaani nojautuen esittelen paikka-analyysimenetelmäni. Se perustuu kaksijakoisuuteen: suunnittelupaikan kokemiseen ja analyysiin. Ensimmäisessä vaiheessa tutustutaan paikkaan kohdekäynnillä, jossa omaa kokemusta tarkastelemalla ja siihen liittyviä muistiinpanoja tekemällä luodaan yleiskuva paikan hengen tärkeimmistä osatekijöistä. Toisessa vaiheessa kokemuksen kautta saatua ymmärrystä paikasta analysoidaan sen osatekijöiden kautta. Lisäksi pohditaan paikan hengelle muita mahdollisesti olennaisia tekijöitä, jotka eivät käyneet ilmi paikkaa kokiessa. Lopuksi kokemiseen ja analyysiin perustuen tehdään johtopäätökset, joilla luodaan perusta suunnittelutyöhön siirtymiselle. Diplomityöni viimeisessä vaiheessa sovellan luomaani paikka-analyysimenetelmää käytäntöön Oulun Hartaanselänrannan alueelle. Dokumentoin ja esittelen kokemustani valokuvien ja paikalla nauhoitettujen huomioideni avulla, minkä jälkeen analysoin tekemiäni havaintoja ja olennaiseksi kokemiani osatekijöitä menetelmääni perustuen. Lopussa pohdin luomani menetelmän ja ottamieni näkökulmien käytettävyyttä ja hyödyntämistä.The spirit and character of place in architecture : bases for initiating design work. Abstract. My diploma thesis is a written study of the spirit of place in architecture; what does it include and what does it mean in architectural discussion. The thesis is written from the perspective of an architect or urban planner who is initiating an analysis of place for a design project. The objective is to research which attributes constitute in the spirit of place and how can they be manipulated through means of design to capture the spirit of place. Another objective is to outline a method for analysis of place. I lay the background for my research by examining environmental aesthetics and architectural theories of experiencing and construing place. The primary focus is on phenomenological experiencing of place. I also discuss construing sub-elements of place and space through basic principles of compositional design elements. As final part of my groundwork I also introduce two existing methods for analysis of place in architecture and contrast their objective and approach to mine. I will then introduce my method for analysis of place, based on the presented background materials and my own discussions. It consists of two parts: the experiencing and the analysis of the place of design. In the first phase the place is visited and experienced through observation. Notes are made to formulate an overview of the essential attributes of the spirit of the place. In the second phase the accumulated knowledge of the place is analysed via its attributes. In addition, any other potentially essential attributes that did not emerge during the experience are reflected upon. Finally, conclusions are made based on the experience and analysis phases, which lays the groundwork for initiating a design phase. In the last part of my diploma thesis I apply the introduced method for analysis of place to practise in Hartaanselänranta district in Oulu. I document and showcase my experience through photos and recordings of observations made during the experience. Afterwards I analyse the observations and remarks by applying the introduced method. In the end I make reflections upon the method and the perspectives of the thesis by evaluating their usefulness and potential for utilisation

    Applicability of open rainfall data to event-scale urban rainfall-runoff modelling

    Rainfall-runoff simulations in urban environments require meteorological input data with high temporal and spatial resolutions. The availability of precipitation data is constantly increasing due to the shift towards more open data sharing. However, the applicability of such data for urban runoff assessments is often unknown. Here, the feasibility of Finnish Meteorological Institute's open rain gauge and open weather radar data as input sources was studied by conducting Storm Water Management Model simulations at a very small (33.5 ha) urban catchment in Helsinki, Finland. In addition to the open data sources, data were also available from two research gauges, one of them located on-site, and from a research radar. The results confirmed the importance of local precipitation measurements for urban rainfall-runoff simulations, implying the suitability of open gauge data to be largely dictated by the gauge's distance from the catchment. Performance of open radar data with 5 min and 1 km' resolution was acceptable in terms of runoff reproduction, albeit peak flows were constantly and flow volumes often underestimated. Gauge adjustment and advection interpolation were found to improve the quality of the radar data, and at least gauge adjustment should be performed when open radar data are used. Finally, utilizing dual-polarization capabilities of radars has a potential to improve rainfall estimates for high intensity storms although more research is still needed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V.     Higher aggression is related to poorer academic performance in compulsory education

    Background To conduct a comprehensive assessment of the association between aggression and academic performance in compulsory education. Method We studied aggression and academic performance in over 27,000 individuals from four European twin cohorts participating in the ACTION consortium (Aggression in Children: Unraveling gene-environment interplay to inform Treatment and InterventiON strategies). Individual level data on aggression at ages 7-16 were assessed by three instruments (Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment, Multidimensional Peer Nomination Inventory, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) including parental, teacher and self-reports. Academic performance was measured with teacher-rated grade point averages (ages 12-14) or standardized test scores (ages 12-16). Random effect meta-analytical correlations with academic performance were estimated for parental ratings (in all four cohorts) and self-ratings (in three cohorts). Results All between-family analyses indicated significant negative aggression-academic performance associations with correlations ranging from -.06 to -.33. Results were similar across different ages, instruments and raters and either with teacher-rated grade point averages or standardized test scores as measures of academic performance. Meta-analytical r's were -.20 and -.23 for parental and self-ratings, respectively. In within-family analyses of all twin pairs, the negative aggression-academic performance associations were statistically significant in 14 out of 17 analyses (r = -.17 for parental- and r = -.16 for self-ratings). Separate analyses in monozygotic (r = -.07 for parental and self-ratings), same-sex dizygotic (r's = -.16 and -.17 for parental and self-ratings) and opposite-sex dizygotic (r's = -.21 and -.19 for parental and self-ratings) twin pairs suggested partial confounding by genetic effects. Conclusions There is a robust negative association between aggression and academic performance in compulsory education. Part of these associations were explained by shared genetic effects, but some evidence of a negative association between aggression and academic performance remained even in within-family analyses of monozygotic twin pairs.Peer reviewe

    FinnTwin12 Cohort : An Updated Review

    This review offers an update on research conducted with FinnTwin12 (FT12), the youngest of the three Finnish Twin Cohorts. FT12 was designed as a two-stage study. In the first stage, we conducted multiwave questionnaire research enrolling all eligible twins born in Finland during 1983–1987 along with their biological parents. In stage 2, we intensively studied a subset of these twins with in-school assessments at age 12 and semistructured poly-diagnostic interviews at age 14. At baseline, parents of intensively studied twins were administered the adult version of the interview. Laboratory studies with repeat interviews, neuropsychological tests, and collection of DNA were made of intensively studied twins during follow-up in early adulthood. The basic aim of the FT12 study design was to obtain information on individual, familial and school/neighborhood risks for substance use/abuse prior to the onset of regular tobacco and alcohol use and then track trajectories of use and abuse and their consequences into adulthood. But the longitudinal assessments were not narrowly limited to this basic aim, and with multiwave, multirater assessments from ages 11 to 12, the study has created a richly informative data set for analyses of gene–environment interactions of both candidate genes and genomewide measures with measured risk-relevant environments. Because 25 years have elapsed since the start of the study, we are planning a fifth-wave follow-up assessment.Peer reviewe

    A large-scale genome-wide association study meta-analysis of cannabis use disorder

    Summary Background Variation in liability to cannabis use disorder has a strong genetic component (estimated twin and family heritability about 50–70%) and is associated with negative outcomes, including increased risk of psychopathology. The aim of the study was to conduct a large genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify novel genetic variants associated with cannabis use disorder. Methods To conduct this GWAS meta-analysis of cannabis use disorder and identify associations with genetic loci, we used samples from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium Substance Use Disorders working group, iPSYCH, and deCODE (20 916 case samples, 363 116 control samples in total), contrasting cannabis use disorder cases with controls. To examine the genetic overlap between cannabis use disorder and 22 traits of interest (chosen because of previously published phenotypic correlations [eg, psychiatric disorders] or hypothesised associations [eg, chronotype] with cannabis use disorder), we used linkage disequilibrium score regression to calculate genetic correlations. Findings We identified two genome-wide significant loci: a novel chromosome 7 locus (FOXP2, lead single-nucleotide polymorphism [SNP] rs7783012; odds ratio [OR] 1·11, 95% CI 1·07–1·15, p=1·84 × 10−9) and the previously identified chromosome 8 locus (near CHRNA2 and EPHX2, lead SNP rs4732724; OR 0·89, 95% CI 0·86–0·93, p=6·46 × 10−9). Cannabis use disorder and cannabis use were genetically correlated (rg 0·50, p=1·50 × 10−21), but they showed significantly different genetic correlations with 12 of the 22 traits we tested, suggesting at least partially different genetic underpinnings of cannabis use and cannabis use disorder. Cannabis use disorder was positively genetically correlated with other psychopathology, including ADHD, major depression, and schizophrenia. Interpretation These findings support the theory that cannabis use disorder has shared genetic liability with other psychopathology, and there is a distinction between genetic liability to cannabis use and cannabis use disorder.     The Early Growth Genetics (EGG) and EArly Genetics and Lifecourse Epidemiology (EAGLE) consortia : design, results and future prospects

    The impact of many unfavorable childhood traits or diseases, such as low birth weight and mental disorders, is not limited to childhood and adolescence, as they are also associated with poor outcomes in adulthood, such as cardiovascular disease. Insight into the genetic etiology of childhood and adolescent traits and disorders may therefore provide new perspectives, not only on how to improve wellbeing during childhood, but also how to prevent later adverse outcomes. To achieve the sample sizes required for genetic research, the Early Growth Genetics (EGG) and EArly Genetics and Lifecourse Epidemiology (EAGLE) consortia were established. The majority of the participating cohorts are longitudinal population-based samples, but other cohorts with data on early childhood phenotypes are also involved. Cohorts often have a broad focus and collect(ed) data on various somatic and psychiatric traits as well as environmental factors. Genetic variants have been successfully identified for multiple traits, for example, birth weight, atopic dermatitis, childhood BMI, allergic sensitization, and pubertal growth. Furthermore, the results have shown that genetic factors also partly underlie the association with adult traits. As sample sizes are still increasing, it is expected that future analyses will identify additional variants. This, in combination with the development of innovative statistical methods, will provide detailed insight on the mechanisms underlying the transition from childhood to adult disorders.
